On May 2-6, the Department of Performing Arts of the Faculty of Arts and Creative Technologies were extremely pleased to welcome prof. Derek Barnes (London, JK), a professional musician and vocal singing specialist. He is well known in many European musical theatres and high schools as a conductor and music director, composer, educator and a teacher of vocal singing. Thanks to his excellence, the musicals ‘Rent’ (Jonathan Larson) and ‘Chicago’ (John Kanter) had a great success on Lithuanian stages. Prof. Derek Barnes leads master classes and lectures on sound and awareness, the use of voice for therapeutic purposes and voice in communication across the UK, France, Germany, Scandinavia, Lithuania and the USA.
Throughout the week, students and graduates of the Musical Theatre study programme hosted a master class in The Musical Theatre Voice – style and technique in context, led by Derek Barnes (London, UK). The faculty community was delighted by the professor’s highly professional lectures, sincere communication and cooperation with lecturers and students. Derek Barnes pointed out that students from the Musical Theatre study programme are motivated, prepared for vocal singing and have a good knowledge of professional musical literature.He also promised to continue the nice collaboration and share his professional knowledge with the community.
Representatives of the Faculty of Arts and Creative Technologies presented prof. Derek Barnes a Community Honorary Degree awarded by the Academic Council of Vilnius University of Applied Sciences for his contribution to our institution.
